Flora Reviews... The Hidden Legacy by Graham Minett

The Hidden Legacy

Read: 11th – 17th October 2015
Format: e-book
My Goodreads Rating:  5 Stars

...So what’s this book about?
This is Mr Minett’s debut novel; a crime/thriller/mystery tale of about 436 pages. Although our main character is Ellen Sutherland, it’s also written from the perspective of various other characters throughout this engaging story.

The official blurb says:
1966. A horrifying crime at a secondary school, with devastating consequences for all involved.

2008. A life-changing gift, if only the recipient can work out why . . .

Bearing the scars of a recent divorce - and the splatters of two young children - Ellen Sutherland is up to her elbows in professional and personal stress. When she's invited to travel all the way out to Cheltenham to hear the content of an old woman's will, she can barely be bothered to make the journey.

But when she arrives, the news is astounding. Eudora Nash has left Ellen a beautiful cottage, worth an amount of money that could turn her life around. There's just one problem - Ellen has never even heard of Eudora Nash.

Her curiosity piqued, Ellen and her friend Kate travel to the West Country in search of answers. But they are not the only ones interested in the cottage, and Ellen little imagines how much she has to learn about her past . . .

Graham Minett's debut novel, The Hidden Legacy, is a powerful and suspenseful tale exploring a mysterious and sinister past.

The publication date for this book is 5th November 2015 but I was lucky enough to be given this book for free from the publisher (Twenty7 Books) via Netgally.com in exchange for a fair review. Thank you.

...So, what did I like about it?

I was very impressed with Mr Minett’s writing style; his use of language, the way he built the plot and added clever twists and turns to his tale. I liked the way this story was told; revealing different aspects of the tale using the viewpoint of his ongoing characters while transporting us to 3 important time frames to expose pertinent situations as they happen.  Don’t worry, I think I’m making it sound more complicated than it is ;-) Mr Minett subtitles each section so that we know who we’re reading about and which time period we’re in. It all flows beautifully allowing the plot to deepen and our connections with, and understanding of, the characters to grow.

I was definitely gripped. I feel as though I’ve been on an amazing journey, I’ve giggled, I’ve cried and I’ve been entertained with a well written mystery that’s also left me asking my own questions about how I choose to treat the people around me. I am the sort of person who sees the glass as being half full rather than half empty so my interpretation of the ending may differ from yours – this is not a definite “happy ever after” ending but it did leave me with a smile on my face. I liked it.

...So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?

I must confess that when I read in the blurb that part of this story was about a child who’d killed another child, I was reluctant to start reading (it’s not a theme I feel comfortable with) however this part of the story was very well written and left me questioning how we view these tragic instances and the people involved, how the media almost certainly play their part in these events and how the ripples of that one moment in time can still be felt throughout the decades.

...So, basically what I’m saying is...

I loved this amazing mystery novel. What twists & turns! What raw emotions! I enjoyed every part of this journey! It sort of reminded me of a few of Agatha Christie’s Miss Marple mysteries in that it had a wealth of well written characters and a plot that exposes the human complexities of life while keeping me reading right to the last page. If you’re a fan of mystery stories I’d definitely recommend buying The Hidden Legacy!

Flora Reviews... Dark Dreams (Progeny of Sin) By Dawn Treadway and Aaron Speca

Dark Dreams (Progeny of Sin) by Dawn Treadway and Aaron Speca

Read: 5th – 17th September 2015
Format: Kindle
My Overall Goodreads Rating:  3.5 Stars

...So what’s this book about?
This is a paranormal romance novel featuring an empathic human female, a muscle-bound hunk of a Djinn and various other species of daemons with three “all-knowing” goddesses thrown in to the mix. ;-)
The blurb says:

The Devil wants his due … The Daemon wants his out … and Jade just wants it all to be over. You don't always get what you want.
Jade Shear is an ordinary girl with an extraordinary ability that’s literally about to send her to Hell. When Daemons discover Jade’s power to read and manipulate others true feelings, they force her to assist with the rescue of their sibling; thrusting her from her everyday normality deep into the Underworld with the tall, dark and deliciously demonic Nias Hu’dor assigned as her guide.
All Nias wants is to live out his life without being involved with anyone else. No more emotion, no more connections, especially to pain in the ass humans. But when he sees Jade twisting a long curl of her wild red hair, and showing off the most amazing backside he’s ever been privy to; Nias just knew he was staring at a world of trouble. How could his family have enlisted him to obtain this girl’s help to traverse Sheol?
This dark paranormal romance takes you from Jade’s everyday existence into the world of the Djinn Sentry; an army of demonic solders determined to protect the human race; and then plummets you straight down into the seething malevolent Underworld where a multi-levelled caste system of Shaitan and the Devil himself welcome you.

As I understand it, Ms Treadway and Mr Speca are busy writing the next book in the Progeny of Sin series to be published by HarperImpulseRomance sometime in the future.

I was lucky enough to receive a digital version of this book for free from the publishers via Netgally.com in exchange for an honest review.

...So, what did I like about it?
I really liked the premise of this book; an ordinary (ish) girl thrown into an extraordinary adventure, who finds romance and the value of her own gumption along the way.
I quickly fell in love with our main character Jade; she was intelligent, with a heart breaking fragility caused by her gift’s (curse) effect on her relationship with others around her but she had courageousness I greatly admired; going into situations to help others despite her own fears.
I used Wikipedia when the story introduced a new species and appreciated the fact that all the creatures of Sheol can be found in actual mythology; I think that added a further dimension to the world-building and gave it an edge of reality that I liked.
I found myself gripped at times, unable to read fast enough, completely engrossed in this tale, enjoying both the evolving relationship between Jade and Nias, the pace, twists and turns of the adventure they were on and the development of the background story arc.

...So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?

Ms Treadway has mentioned online that she had read both Dante Alighieri’s “Divine Comedy” and John Milton’s “Paradise Lost” and loosely based her levels of Sheol on their ideas. I haven’t read either of these classics and the faith that I live by does not feature a “hell when your soul goes to be eternally punished for a perceived sin” so at times I found this aspect of the story confusing and a little frustrating. However, after a while I decided to view this aspect as I would any other fantasy created world and just accept it as a part of the world-building of this particular story and go with the flow!

...So, basically what I’m saying is...
I like this book; you’ve got two strong main characters but both have soft, warm hearts, a passionate blossoming romance (with both teasing sexual tension as well as graphic sexy scenes this is not a YA tale) and a battle between good and evil. What more do you want from a paranormal romance?! I’m looking forward to seeing where the authors take the story next.

Flora Reviews... The Last True Vampire (Last True Vampire #1) by Kate Baxter

The Last True Vampire (Last True Vampire #1)

Read: 1st – 4th September 2015
Format: Kindle
My Overall Goodreads Rating:  5 Stars

...So what’s this book about?
This is the first book in a new paranormal romance series about vampires, half breeds, slayers and other creatures that go bump in the night.

The blurb says:

Soul Survivor.
He is the last of his race. King of the vampires. Michael Aristov roams the nightclubs of LA after dark, haunted by his past and driven by his hunger. The only Ancient One to survive the obliteration of his race, he's forced to hunt like a common vampire, governed by lust. Nothing can fulfil his needs ... until he meets the woman who finally awakens his soul.

Sweet Salvation.

Their first fiery kiss sweeps Claire into a deadly world where darkness rules desire, and falling in love is the greatest danger of all. ...So, what did I like about it?
I found Ms Baxter’s writing style very easy to read. I thought her world building was really good; I liked the idea of all Vampires’ memories being connected (The Collective), the part that the Dhampiri (vampire half-breeds) played and their relationship to the Vampires.
I am an old romantic at heart so the “two halves of one soul reunited” love story part satisfied my mushy side but it was the will Michael and Claire actually get together, their doubts, their insecurities that added a very real and contemporary romance element to this tale that keeps you guessing.
The balance between tense scenes, action scenes and sexual scenes was good, there was a lump in my throat a number of times reading this story and I can’t tell you how many times the temperature seemed to mount while reading certain scenes too!

...So, ummm, was there anything I disliked about it?
In a word - no. J It’s the first book in a new series, so I was expecting a cliffhanger but I was pleased that the relationship part of this tale ended (in my opinion) happily. I’m OK that the background story arcs; battling Dhampiri covens and the vampire annihilation threat from the Sortiari slayers will be continued in the following books.

...So, basically what I’m saying is...
I really loved this amazing novel and I’ve found a new favourite author too! Woohoo!
If you’re a fan of adult paranormal romance stories where your heroines are intelligent, witty and independent and your heroes strong, sexy with a big heart waiting to be unleashed or if you’ve enjoyed reading the “destined soul mate” theme of Felicity Heaton’s Eternal Mates Series or Dianne Duvall’s Immortal Guardians Series, then I think you’ll love this paranormal romance novel too.
